Medical weight loss programs have proven to be one of the most effective and safest means of losing excess weight with sustainable results. Successful weight loss programs supervised by medical professionals will often consist of a calorie-deficient diet, a recommended exercise regimen, and weight loss medication such as Wegovy to further support the weight loss results and make the process a bit easier for the patient.
Wegovy is a brand of the medication semaglutide that has been FDA-approved for use as part of medical weight loss treatments. Semaglutide was previously only approved for use as a type 2 diabetes medication under the name brand Ozempic but has been altered in dosage to make it safely available for weight loss after providing substantial results supporting its use for safe and effective weight loss. Wegovy will only be prescribed for weight loss for patients who are considered to be overweight with at least one weight-related health condition or obese and who are undergoing a medical weight loss treatment through a licensed health care provider. The medication is very effective for weight loss but should only be taken as per the recommendations of the medical professional to provide safe and effective results that can be sustained long-term.
Patients can expect to start to see some weight loss results within about 4 weeks of starting Wegovy, but these results can take longer or develop faster depending on how well the patient responds to the medication. Wegovy is administered through a subcutaneous injection that gradually increases in dosage to minimize the risk of side effects as much as possible and to ensure that the patient has minimal adverse reactions to the medication. If a patient responds well to the medication and can closely follow the other components of the weight loss program including the diet and exercise regimen, they will likely be able to achieve the desired results much faster. Since the medication must be slowly increased in dosage, it is unlikely to experience significant results very early on, with most patients starting to notice the full effects of the treatment after several months of the medical weight loss treatment.
While there will likely not be significant weight loss in the first month, most patients only lose around 5% of their total body weight within that first month of receiving Wegovy. Each month will include an increase in dosage, causing the medication to become more effective and allowing the patient to more easily maintain a calorie-deficient diet and regular exercise regimen, offering more substantial results. On average, patients can expect to lose around 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, which is the most commonly recommended timeline for the medication to be included in the medical weight loss program. The longer the patient takes Wegovy and the more closely they follow all of the recommended components of their medical weight loss program, the more weight they are likely to be able to lose. More substantial results will be visible after multiple months of taking Wegovy. Once they have reached the maximum dose of Wegovy, patients can expect to lose around 4 to 8 pounds every month.
Wegovy is administered through weekly subcutaneous (under the skin) injections that start at a fairly low dose and are increased in dosage every 4 weeks as long as the patient is responding well to the medication and no severe adverse reactions are being experienced. Patients who are not responding ideally to the medication will likely be recommended to increase the dosage at a slower rate to ensure that their bodies can become more accustomed to the medication before increasing the dose. Wegovy comes in 5 different doses, starting at 0.25 mg once weekly to 2.4 mg weekly. The medication should be administered on the same day every week but can be administered at any point throughout the chosen day and with or without food.
Wegovy can assist obese people who are unable to reduce weight. Visit our clinic at PrimeHealth Urgent Care for Wegovy medical weight loss injections.
