At PrimeHealth Urgent Care, we understand the importance of maintaining the health and safety of those who operate commercial motor vehicles. We proudly offer comprehensive Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exams to ensure that drivers are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to perform their duties.
During a DOT physical exam at our facility, our licensed medical examiners will conduct a thorough review of the driver’s medical history, including past surgeries, chronic illnesses, and any current medications. We also discuss lifestyle habits such as diet, exercise, smoking, or drinking, as these can significantly impact a driver’s overall health.
Our DOT physical exams include a complete evaluation of the following systems:
• Eyes and Vision: We test visual acuity, field of vision, color perception, and depth perception, and assess for color blindness, peripheral vision, and clarity of vision.
• Ears and Hearing: We assess hearing ability in both ears and the driver’s ability to hear a forced whisper at a distance of 5 feet.
• Heart and Cardiovascular System: We check blood pressure, heart rate, and rhythm, and listen to the heart for murmurs or other abnormalities.
• Lungs and Respiratory System: We assess the lungs for any wheezing or rales, measure forced vital capacity (FVC) or tidal volume, and examine the driver for any breathing difficulties.
• Musculoskeletal System: We evaluate the range of motion and flexibility, examine the knees, ankles, and feet, and assess strength and coordination.
• Neurological System: We test reflexes, evaluate balance and coordination, and conduct a mental status assessment.
• Other Tests: We perform urinalysis to check for protein, glucose, blood, or the presence of drugs or alcohol, and measure blood pressure at various intervals.
At PrimeHealth Urgent Care, we also understand that mental health is a critical aspect of a driver’s ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle. Consequently, we conduct a psychological examination during the DOT physical.
Our medical examiners will then review all findings and determine the driver’s fitness to operate a commercial vehicle. We may order additional tests based on the individual’s medical history or current symptoms. We may recommend follow-up tests or treatments if any health issues are identified.
The DOT physicals at PrimeHealth Urgent Care are designed to ensure that drivers are physically and mentally capable of safely operating commercial vehicles. We perform a complete medical examination that includes drug and alcohol screenings, vision and hearing tests, and other necessary health assessments.
Our drug and alcohol screenings typically involve urinalysis and breath alcohol tests. In urinalysis, we test for substances such as marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and phencyclidine (PCP). A positive result for any of these substances will preclude a driver from acquiring a DOT medical card. The breath alcohol test measures blood alcohol levels, and a reading of 0.04 or higher indicates the driver is “under the influence” and will not pass the DOT physical.
At PrimeHealth Urgent Care, we prioritize the confidentiality of our patients. The results of your drug and alcohol screenings are used solely to determine your fitness to operate a commercial vehicle and are available within a few days.
In the event of a positive screening, we provide guidance on the necessary steps to regain eligibility to operate a commercial vehicle, including successful completion of a rehabilitation program and follow-up screening.
Our commitment to safety in the transportation industry extends beyond DOT physicals. We also offer regular checks and ongoing monitoring to ensure that drivers remain fit and healthy and are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on the job.
In doing so, we aim to help prevent accidents and fatalities caused by impaired driving, thereby ensuring the safety of drivers and the public at large. Trust PrimeHealth Urgent Care for your DOT physicals and other health needs.
Adhering to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) guidelines, we offer comprehensive DOT physical examinations. These evaluations are indispensable for commercial drivers, who are mandated to undergo them every two years. The certification from this exam is generally valid for up to 24 months, however, there may be instances where the medical certificate is issued for less than this period, especially if conditions like high blood pressure need to be monitored more frequently.
At PrimeHealth, our DOT physical exams are meticulously designed to identify any physical, mental, or emotional concerns that could potentially compromise your ability for safely operating a commercial vehicle.
Our healthcare providers are not just qualified, but are certified medical examiners, ensuring that you receive the highest quality care and assessment. Drivers must remember that not every healthcare provider meets these qualifications.
At PrimeHealth Urgent Care, we not only meet these qualifications, but we strive to provide convenient, efficient, and comprehensive care for all our patients.
